This Week

The first Monday is over.  I think it was harder today to get up and get going than it was the first day.  Some of the children agreed with me.  I have a few children who have a hard time coming in first thing in the morning without being emotional.  Once they are in the classroom and get started I don't see another tear all day. They get right down to work and begin to laugh and socialize with the other children.  So, please don't worry about them.
Last Friday we started writing in the notebook marked Friday Journal.  If you did not see that in the book bag over the weekend, please look for it tonight.  I am impressed with their written language ability this early in the year.   Look for the letter from me taped on the inside cover of the notebook for a more detailed explanation.  Your response is so important to them.
Also, in the book bag you will see  the WORD JOURNAL.  These are the vocabulary words from the first grade basal reader.  The children will need to know theses words with instant recall to be able to do the daily reading workbook pages.  We do practice them in class but extra practice at home is beneficial to their reading progress.  Please have them read the words to you until they know them without hesitation.  Then sign the page and return the notebook to school.   It is due back by Wednesday, 8-26. There will be a new list of Word Journal vocabulary nearly every week of school.  The children will be tested over recognition of these words for a grade on their report card.
There is a page of math for homework tonight, page 5B.  Please send that back to school with your child on Tuesday.
Ask your child about the exciting news.  Our class is going to be featured on KOMU TV saying the Pledge of Allegiance on the morning news!! KOMU will be here filing us on September 9th.  If for any reason you do not want your child to participate, please send me an email saying that.
