Lent

  We have been studying the liturgical season of Lent and the many things our faith teaches us about it.  The fist component of Lent we are talking about is prayer.  Today we practiced praying more intently by leading the school in the Stations of the Cross with the help of the fifth grade.  We will be studying more about them in class as well as the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary. The second component of Lent we are learning about is fasting.   If you have not heard yet, we all chose something to give up for Lent.  Some gave up watching TV.  Some gave up being mean to their brothers and sisters!  We have a visual guide we talk about each day in class helping us count down the 40 days of Lent.  Some days we are more successful than other days at keeping our Lenten promise.  By giving something up, the children are learning about the concept of fasting.  The third and final component of Lent we are discussing is alms giving or tithing.  We have talked about giving back to God just a little bit of all the great things he has given to us.  I am asking for your help on this one.  We talked in class about the children doing a small chore to earn a dime.  Then, I would like the children to be responsible for putting it into an envelope with their name on it and bringing it to school to put in the collection basket at the school Mass.  This week the school Mass is on Friday.  Thank you for helping me teach about the concepts of alms giving and tithing.
There will be a new list of words Journal Vocabulary coming home tonight.  A new spelling list will come home Tuesday.  The pretest is Thursday with the final test on Friday.  Today there is no math homework because we worked so intently on the presentation of the Stations of the Cross for the school.  I do expect there will be math homework every night for the rest of this week.
