First Full Week

 We have made it through the first full week.  There is a lot of adjusting all of us are working through these first few days. I'm sure glad it was only three days last week.  I was exhausted last Friday afternoon.

Getting through Mass last Friday was tough. When you take your child to Mass on the weekend, have them stand when it is time to stand and kneel, not sit, when it is time to kneel.  They should always face forward and pay attention to what the priest is doing. 

Tonight there will be homework for the first time.  A notebook marked Word Journal is coming home with Lesson One High-Frequency Words in it.  These words are from our reading lesson this week.  We practice them in class but some children may need a bit more practice.  So each night for homework have your child read the lines on the paper to you.  Return the notebook on Thursday this week with your signature at the bottom of the page indicating your child read these words to you each night.  They will be tested over all the word lists in this notebook for a report card grade.

They also have a math page that is due tomorrow, page 4 side B. Most nights, Monday through Thursday, there will be a page of math to do. It is usually the back of the page we did in class.  Doing it again at home keeps you informed of what we are learning in math.  And it reinforces the lesson we did in class.

In first through the eighth-grade homework must be turned in on time.  The student has three times to forget to turn in their homework.  I call those three times, Ooopies.  After three Ooopsies, the student misses recess to complete homework.  That is called Homework Helpers.  The parent will receive an email from Mr. Veit.  After three Homework Helpers visits, the student, teacher, parents, and Mr. Veit conference and after-school visits with Mr. Veit will occur.  Although this has not happened a great deal in my class, it is important to impress upon your child the importance of bringing the work home in their FISH Folder on the Right Back to School side.  After completion at home with your help, it goes right back in the folder and in the bookbag.  Gaining organizational skills is key in the first grade.
